Creating Space and Harmony for Three Generations Under One Roof
NE 12TH ST, MEDINA
IN-LAW SUITE ADDITION
MULTI-GENERATIONAL HOME
Multi-generational living was the driving force behind the ambitious remodeling project on NE 12th Street. The homeowners’ aging parents were selling their longtime home and moving in, which meant the existing layout needed to accommodate three generations under one roof while maintaining everyone’s privacy and independence. The family reached out to Gold Remodeling with a unique challenge: create a separate suite for the grandparents on the main floor, update the kitchen to handle cooking for a larger household, and add a rec room where grandkids could play when they visited.
They’d been referred to us by neighbors who’d raved about our communication, craftsmanship, and ability to handle complex projects without stress. As we toured their NE 12th Street home that first day, we could see the love this family had for each other and their commitment to making this arrangement work beautifully for everyone. Our design team got to work creating a plan that would give each generation its own space while bringing everyone together in shared areas.
The transformation took five months and required thoughtful planning at every turn. We converted a first-floor den and adjacent storage area into a complete in-law suite with a bedroom, sitting area, full bathroom with walk-in shower and safety features, and a kitchenette for morning coffee and light snacks. The main kitchen was expanded and completely remodeled with two ovens, a larger refrigerator, extensive pantry storage, and a spacious island where multiple cooks could work simultaneously.
We finished the basement into a cheerful playroom with durable flooring, built-in toy storage, and a bathroom convenient for little ones. Throughout the home, we improved soundproofing between floors, upgraded the HVAC system to better serve the expanded occupancy, and created wider hallways and doorways for accessibility.
Our licensed contractors handled all structural work, permits, and inspections seamlessly. When the grandparents moved in just days after project completion, the whole family gathered in the new kitchen for a celebration dinner. The NE 12th Street home had become exactly what they needed—a place where three generations could thrive together, each with space to breathe, all under one carefully remodeled roof.
